One of my students sent me this email:
I would like comments on the recent trend of our state writing exam for fifth graders. The prompt now includes the word next as in, 'Write a story about what happens next." To me this sounds as though you want the writer to pick up the story and continue action that comes after the prompt. That is not the case. The prompt gives setting and big moment. The student is expected to write a story with setting paragraph, big moment paragraph, then conclusion (next). My students had not practiced with prompts that included the word next and weren't sure where to begin the story. Our scores dropped 27% in this mode due to the confusion. Of course, I will know now to include this phrase in all practice prompts, but I wonder if anyone else thinks it is incorrect to ask students to write what happens next, but expect a review of setting and drama.

Wondering what in the world you are doing this summer! I am enjoying the gorgeous early spring in TC. I am tempted to even start planting my garden already. I know I will be sorry if I do! Frost is still on its way.
